Atlas Celestial
An interactive astronomical sphere assembled like a puzzle to reveal constellation maps from four cultures.
Problem
The map had to feel like an object explored by hand: twelve pieces, turns that can block one another, and glyphs that respond only when aligned.
Engineering
A Three.js 3D model preserves the puzzle’s mechanical rules: each turn snaps on release, a partial turn blocks perpendicular movement, and three glyphs activate the atlas. The map projects real star data and switches between Western, Inuit, Chinese, and Egyptian traditions. Geometry, materials, and cultural assets are prepared for desktop and mobile.
Outcome
Published on Cloudflare with four cultural sky maps, bilingual constellation profiles, and an animated solution for exploring the instrument without solving it manually.
Capabilities
- Twelve sections with horizontal and vertical turns, interlocks, and automatic snapping.
- Three physical glyphs that depress when pressed and unlock the map.
- Western, Inuit, Chinese, and Egyptian maps with distinct materials.
- Interactive star atlas with zoom, selection, and profiles in Spanish and English.
- Animated automatic assembly and adaptable mobile quality.
